How do we test for safety

Your safety is our top priority. We want to reassure you that our Always products are safe to use - they go through rigorous exposure-based safety assessments and [AG6.1]follow strict national and international standards.

Our safety evaluations use Exposure-Based Risk Assessment frameworks aligned with principles established by the World Health Organization and The European Chemicals Agency. We follow established industry standards, like CEN CWA 18062 protocol, which are used to assess safety under bio realistic conditions.

Will your pads irritate the skin
So, like our unscented pads and liners, our scented products are safe for use. We select materials, including the fragrance in our scented products, which are not irritating and do not cause itching when used in a pad. Additionally, the fragrance used in our pads and liners meet the strict safety standards set by the International Fragrance Association, the world's leading authority on fragrance safety. We recommend our unscented products for those who prefer fragrance-free products or who may be sensitive to fragrances.

P&G’s 4-step science-based process

Safety is at the heart of everything we do. Before we market a new product, we go beyond regulatory compliance to ensure every ingredient’s safety through a four-step, science-based process. We use the same process as regulatory agencies around the world, like US FDA, EPA, the EU, the WHO, and others.

DOUBT

Before we use any ingredient, our scientists start by asking questions. If there’s any doubt about its safety or benefit to you, we won’t use it.

DEFINE

We define the ingredient’s safe range using the same science-based standards as major regulatory agencies around the world.

DETERMINE

We evaluate all ingredients in the product to ensure they are safe when used - both for you and the environment. If we can’t confirm that, we go back to the drawing board.

DILIGENCE

Our last step never ends. Once a product is on shelves, we keep up with new information on each ingredient, collaborating on new products safety methods with regulatory agencies and scientists outside of P&G to make sure we’re up to date.

Most importantly, we listen to you—making sure the products we design meet your expectations for safety and performance.

Only the products and the materials that meet our multi-step science-based safety standards can go to market. Globally, we have more than 200 in-house experts who are devoted to environmental safety, human safety and regulatory compliance for all our products and ingredients. Our products are considered medical devices in the U.S. and, therefore, are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Our pads are used safely by millions of women, every day. Your safety is at the center of everything we do and so our products are rigorously tested, with dozens of extensive quality tests carried out on our products during manufacture before use.

Over 200 scientists with broad scientific backgrounds within the Global Product Stewardship Organization are dedicated to ensuring our products are safe and in compliance with global regulations. We collaborate externally to ensure our safety assessment, interpretation and our testing methodologies are up to date. This includes our work with scientists from academia, industry and third-party credentialing organizations*. Our collaborative work and active participation in scientific research with publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, contributes to advance the science of toxicology.
