Getting your period for the first time can be a daunting experience. The changes in your body and the helplessness you feel knowing that this is going to happen every month for most of your life is all quite overwhelming. Although there's nothing you can do to avoid periods and everything that comes with it, what you can do is use your experience to help your daughter (or pre-teenager) prepare for and track her periods.

Getting your period for the first time can be a daunting experience.

Guiding your pre-teen daughter on how to track her periods will allow her to be mentally prepared for her monthly cycle and learn to observe the changes in her body. And after a few months of charting, she may also be able to recognise some of the PMS symptoms she may be having, which will equip her to deal with them better.

You can either opt to physically write down the dates and other data in a journal or you can use an app with built-in filters and features to store data. Allow her to choose what she's comfortable with.

Once you have finalized the mode of tracking, here's what you need to observe and record.

<ul><li>The first day of your daughter's period i.e., the first day of her menstrual cycle. Ask her to note it down every month. She can also note if she experiences any cramps, spotting, or any other symptoms.</li>
<li>The last day of her period. How many days did it last or are the number of days consistent every month?</li>
<li>Wait for the first day of her next period. The first day of her period and the day before the first day of the next period makes up her menstrual cycle. Ask her to keep tabs on the number of days in each cycle. Typically, a normal cycle can last anywhere between 21 to 35 days.</li></ul>

Once your daughter is accustomed to charting her period calendar, she can start preparing for her periods. She can stash up on pads, carry them in her bag, or keep medication for cramps handy because now she knows when she'll be expecting her periods. To make this easier, you can help her select and buy the right sanitary pad; one which fits her properly. Keeping a period journal will also help detect any PMS symptoms that she may be experiencing.
